2019 Cycling Without Age

Cycling Without Age: Make the Ride Happen A Program of Lutheran Social Services

Fox Cities Greenways, Inc. is partnering with LSS/Make the Ride Happen, Wisconsin Bike Fed, and Volunteer Fox Cities to develop a Cycling Without Age program in the Fox Cities.  While most of us are able to ride a bicycle, there are people in our community with mobility issues or who lack the independence to experience the joys of cycling and the benefits of being outdoors.

These specially designed trishaws provide an opportunity for not only seniors, but volunteer pilots to develop inter-generational relationships, choose an alternative form of transportation, improve the quality of their lives, increase social contacts and most importantly it reflects an active and engaged community.  LSS/Make the Ride Happen will initially schedule trishaw rides for nondriving seniors, caregiver support groups and MindWorks.  LSS/Make the Ride Happen provides services to Outagamie, Winnebago and Calumet Counties.

Our Partnership

Fox Cities Greenways will be donating the first trishaw and will raise funds for the second trishaw and a trailer.   Volunteer Fox Cities will assist with recruitment and management of volunteers. Wisconsin Bike Fed will provide Volunteer Training, Training of Trainers, a trishaw preventative maintenance checklist, training for trishaw repair persons and will develop programs for each of these.  LSS/Make the Ride Happen will coordinate and manage the Cycling Without Age program.

The Movement

Cycling Without Age is a movement started in Copenhagen in 2012 by Ole Kassow.  Ole wanted to help seniors get back on their bicycles, but he had to address their limited mobility.  The answer was a trishaw, and he started offering free rides to local nursing home residents.  He then worked with Dorthe Pedersen to establish Cycling Without Age in the municipality of Copenhagen, and in the past seven years the program has spread quickly to all corners of the earth. Wisconsin in the fastest growing state in the USA for Cycling Without Age Chapters.  The program relies on trained volunteer pilots to sign up for trishaw rides with seniors.  (For more information:
