Fostering the Development and Preservation of Trails and Greenways in the Greater Fox Cities Region!
Cycling Without Age Arrives in the Fox Valley
Fox Cities Greenways, Inc. has partnered with Brewster Village, Outagamie County’s Short and Long Term Care Facility, and Fox Cities Cycling Association to establish a Cycling Without Age program in the Fox Cities. While most of us are able to ride a bicycle, there are people in the community with mobility issues or who lack the independence to experience the joys and benefits of cycling. Cycling Without Age uses specially designed rickshaw bicycles to provide nursing home residents and people with differing abilities the opportunity to experience the joys and benefits of cycling in a social setting while enjoying the fresh air and the community around them.
Fox Cities Greenways, Inc. has donated the first rickshaw to Brewster Village as part of its initiative to not only increase the use of trails, but make them available to people regardless of age or ability. Brewster Village’s goal is to build a fleet of rickshaws to not only serve the residents of Brewster Village, but the Fox Cities Community. Fox Cities Cycling Association will be providing volunteers and coordinating pilot training. In future years, the program will be expanded to include additional rickshaws, locations, and cities in the Fox Valley Region.
Cycling Without Age is a movement started in Copenhagen in 2012 by Ole Kassow. Ole wanted to help the elderly get back on their bicycles, but he had to address their limited mobility. The answer was a rickshaw, and he started offering free rides to local nursing home residents. He then worked with Dorthe Pedersen to establish Cycling Without Age in the municipality of Copenhagen, and in the past twelve months the program has spread quickly to all corners of the earth, including more than two dozen chapters in the United States and Canada. The program relies on trained volunteer pilots to sign up for rickshaw rides with the elderly. In Denmark alone, more than 400 rickshaws and over 3,000 pilots ensure that the elderly get out of their care facilities on bikes to enjoy the fresh air and community around them. Brewster Village, Fox Cities Greenways, Inc. (FCGI), and Fox Cities Cycling Association (FCCA) are uniquely situated to establish a Cycling Without Age program in the Fox Cities. We have also reached out to several other organizations that are interested in partnering with us once we get the program fully established. It is our expectation that we will be successful in establishing the program in 2016. We hope to expand the Cycling Without Age program in future years, adding more rickshaws and locations in order to serve additional organizations and communities in the Fox Cities region.
